Letting In Some Light

maya mima

In May this year, I started taking photos on a film camera as a way of documenting my daily life. I have never been very good at remembering to take photos even during trips and events, which sometimes left me feeling regretful. I felt that the deliberateness of taking photos on a roll of film, would encourage me to look through a lens more often, and capture some of the fleeting moments.

I started by taking photographs of the house I moved into recently with my partner, and our cat. We live in an old residential area in Kyoto, and the street we live on is unpaved, with patches of clover growing on the sides. Inside, the house is low-ceilinged, with tatami floors, and none of the right angles are quite straight, but that tickles our sense of humour. At the other end of the kitchen is my new studio, and I have started dyeing fabric and making new works in this space. The light from the big windows marks the passage of time along with the quiet sounds of the neighbourhood.
