Maya Mima works with textiles to explore ideas of belonging, memory, and cultural inheritance. Raised in Pondicherry, India, and currently based in Kyoto, their practice reflects the nuances of a mixed Japanese and Indian heritage. Drawing on local craft traditions and personal history, Mima works with natural dyes, foraged plant material, old fabrics, and hand embroidery to create layered, tactile installations.
Their work brings together research, oral histories, and community engagement, using the material language of textile to create spaces of gathering and dialogue. With a particular interest in how objects carry and transmit meaning across generations, Mima constructs environments where inherited practices intersect with contemporary questions of identity and place. They also facilitate workshops as part of a community-based approach to art-making.
Mima’s work has been shown in the Kochi Students’ Biennale (2022–23); the Inter-University Dyeing and Weaving Exchange Exhibition (2023); and the Kyoto Prefecture Emerging Artists Selection Exhibition (2024), among others.
They completed a BA in History of Art at Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan (2022) and an MFA in Textile Arts from Kyoto City University of Arts (2025).
The artist lives and works in Kyoto.
